Types of Diabetes – Why should we care?

It is no longer news that diabetes is one of the most ravaging disease of our time. But what many fail to realize that there are several types of diabetes. The level of knowledge we have about a challenge (like diabetes) go a long way to determine our capacity to overcome it. So, the goal of of this write-up is to bring to light the different type of diabetes and improve our understanding of the differences between the types of diabetes in order to properly care for the disease. The different types of diabetes means the symptoms and treatment plans will not be the same for each diabetes type. This is why I think it is important we have good information on this topic. So, let’s dive into it. There are four main types of diabetes I will be addressing briefly in this series of article.

Type 1 Diabetes

Another name commonly used to address this type of diabetes is juvenile-onset diabetes or as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The term juvenile is used basically because this type of diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. Statistics have shown that one about only about 5% -10% of people with diabetes have this form of the disease. Type 1 diabetes mainly result from the body’s inability to produce insulin. Oh, I might need to back tract and explain what insulin as this will be very important in understanding the nature of type 1 diabetes. Insulin is the hormone (mostly made by the pancreas) responsible for opening up the body’s cells and allowing glucose to enter them. So, insulin allows our body to use sugar (glucose) from carbohydrates in the food that we eat for energy or to store glucose for future use. So, I think it is safe to say that without insulin the body will be unable to use glucose properly. And you and I know that without glucose the body will have no fuel and thus can shut down. This process gives us an implication of what drives type 1 diabetes. Lack of proper functioning of insulin means body cells can become literally starved for energy. If this persists over time critical body organs such as your kidneys, heart, eyes as well as nerves can become damaged.

How type 1 diabetes is managed?

The explanation above makes it clear why most treatment plan for type 1 diabetes involves regular insulin injections. The insulin therapy and other treatments have made it possible for even young children to learn how to manage their condition and live long and healthy lives even with type 1 diabetes.

What Causes Type 1 Diabetes and Can Type 1 diabetes be cured?

type-1-diabetes-ribbonMany people have been interested on the factors that causes type 1 diabetes. There is no direct answer to this question. But what we know is that there are various factors may contribute to type 1 diabetes. This include genetics and exposure to certain viruses. What is most troubling however is that despite active research, most experts have said that type 1 diabetes still has no cure. On the other hand, I was watching a video online few weeks ago where Dr David Pearson on the other hand argues that insulin therapy of type 1 diabetes is simply managing the disease without necessary addressing the root cause of the problem. This doctor claim that “Not only is a complete solution and cure for diabetes possible but is already scientifically proven”. Dr David Pearson went ahead to make a very controversial statement that “Insulin is not the most effective means to regulate blood sugar.” It is not surprising that so many people consider these claims as astounding. I started some investigation on Dr David Pearson statement and take a look at his Diabetes free program. In the process I found out about other diabetes cure program. These include: Reverse Your diabetes Today, Diabetes Freedom Program, and Blood Sugar Miracle Program By Dr Loh and Duke Anderson. From what we are hearing so far, Dr David Pearson might actually be revealing ways on how to defeat Type1 diabetes and possibly uncovering the path to make the world diabetes free.

Be on the look out for the part 2 of this article where we we delve deeper into Type 2 diabetes.
